The Daly River Barra Classic: A Fishing Extravaganza with a Twist
The Daly River Barra Classic, an annual fishing tournament held in the remote Northern Territory, is a spectacle that attracts anglers from across the country. This year, the event has taken on a unique twist, with sharks becoming an unexpected challenge for the participants. The tournament, which has been running since 1982, is a testament to the allure of the Daly River and its iconic fish, the barra.
A Celebrity Angler's Perspective
Australian cricket legend Merv Hughes, a regular participant, shares his love for the tournament, "The first time you do it, you just fall in love with the place. This is the premiere fishing competition in Australia — the Daly River, Northern Territory, chasing an iconic fish. It doesn't get any better than this."
His enthusiasm is shared by many, drawn by the opportunity to escape Melbourne's cold winters and the sense of community the tournament fosters.
The Shark Factor
However, this year, the anglers are not just battling the elements and the river's treacherous terrain but also the sharks. The rise in shark sightings has been attributed to the record-breaking floods that hit the region in March, according to marine ecologist Joni Pini-Fitzsimmons. She explains, "We got a lot of runoff, that could be improving bait and different prey of sharks, so we could be seeing a little bit of an uptick because of that."
The sharks, it seems, are quick learners, as Dr. Pini-Fitzsimmons notes, "Sharks are smart. They can very quickly learn associations between boat noise, struggling fish, and an easy meal. There might not be more sharks, but instead more people fishing and lots of smart sharks showing up for a quick feed."
Adapting to Change
To counter this new challenge, the organizers have introduced a new app to help anglers log hazards, including snags and logs, that have appeared after the floods. This technology is a welcome addition, as veteran angler Alastair Shields points out, "There's lots and lots of fish … and they're fat, healthy, silver fish but it's a bit treacherous with all the new snags and logs."
The app, as Judy Ward explains, allows anglers to flag hazards and get coordinates, making it easier to navigate the river's new obstacles. "If you see a snag, you flag it and get the co-ordinates," she says. "Then when you get back you just scan a QR code … and they'll come out and put buoys on there for us."
The Daly River Barra Classic is more than just a fishing tournament; it's a celebration of nature, community, and the spirit of adventure. As the anglers battle the river, the sharks, and the elements, they create memories that will last a lifetime, all while chasing the iconic barra fish.
